“Warm congratulations, Karl-Martin — you glow and warm with your playing, inspiring and spreading tones that truly touch.”
Karl-Martin Almqvist is a well-known name on the Nordic jazz scene. With an expression that is both deeply emotional and energetically driven, he often moves through a lyrical and reflective soundscape where soft ballad tones meet rhythmic intensity, creating a distinctive and unmistakable voice.
Already at the age of nine he received his first saxophone — an instrument that has been his constant companion ever since. After high school he studied at Skurup’s Folk High School of Music and at the Conservatory of Music in Malmö, before moving to New York for further studies at the Mannes College of Music.
His years in New York proved decisive for his musical development. There he studied, among others, with George Garzone and performed extensively on the city’s jazz scene, from Small’s and Birdland to the Knitting Factory and many smaller clubs.
He has released four albums under his own name and has been a frequent guest at Jazz Baltica, where he has also participated in projects together with Pat Metheny. In recent years he has had a close association with the Norrbotten Big Band, and since 2014 he has also been a member of the DR Big Band in Copenhagen.
On stage:
Karl-Martin Almqvist – saxophone
Rasmus Sørensen – piano
Daniel Franck – bass
Jonas Holgersson – drums
The concert will be recorded by Swedish Radio P2, Jazzradion.
