Kjetil Mulelid’s Agoja unfolds as a richly textured and atmospheric form of contemporary Nordic jazz, where lyrical melodies meet open, exploratory structures. Led by Norwegian pianist and composer Kjetil Mulelid—one of the most distinctive voices of his generation—the music is rooted in the Scandinavian jazz tradition yet reaches far beyond it. It moves fluidly between intimacy and expansiveness, combining hymn-like passages, baroque-tinged motifs, and gently shifting grooves with moments of near-silence and shimmering sonic detail. Improvisation plays a central role, with each musician stepping in and out of the collective sound, creating a dynamic interplay that feels both free and carefully composed. The result is evocative, cinematic music—at once melancholic, playful, and deeply expressive—often described as “tone poetry” in sound.
Mulelid has established himself internationally through his trio, collaborations with Siril Malmedal Hauge, and as a member of bands such as Wako and Beiggja. His solo album Piano (2021) drew comparisons to icons like Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau, and Bill Evans.
With Agoja, released in 2024 and praised as “a modern Nordic masterpiece” by Jazzwise, Mulelid brings together a septet of exceptional musicians. The project premiered at the Oslo Jazz Festival and continued to festivals such as Vossajazz. Created during a transformative period in his life, the music reflects both a contemplative view of existence and a tender, playful tribute to new beginnings—its title inspired by the first word spoken by his son.
Mulelid’s compositions are melodic yet unpredictable, each piece unfolding with its own identity while bearing his distinctive touch. As a bandleader, he creates space for individual expression, allowing the ensemble to shape the music collectively. The result is a deeply nuanced listening experience—rich in detail, emotion, and sonic imagination—where every pause, ascent, and subtle shift contributes to an ever-evolving musical narrative.
