The ten-piece band Östblocket, with its somewhat mythical name, is celebrating 30 years! This wild group of musicians from Malmö is constantly seeking new influences across different musical styles, primarily rooted in music from the East. Balkan party sounds, melancholic Jewish klezmer, fierce Romani accordion music, winding oriental melodies, and good old Swedish revelry are blended at high speed into thrilling dance music. A concert with Östblocket is a safe bet for anyone looking to experience high intensity, virtuosic instrumentalists, and genuine joy of playing.
Their music can be described as Swedish Balkan, drawing on several different Eastern European musical traditions. Östblocket performs original material with lyrics in Swedish as well as interpretations of traditional music in its original languages, moving freely between the traditional and the more contemporary.
Östblocket continues to explore and develop the genre they themselves have been instrumental in creating. Their music, always synonymous with celebration and dance, also makes brief stops in melancholy and sorrow.
Their sound and uncompromising approach to groove-driven interplay remain unmistakable after 30 years together—a band whose party energy has few equals. Dance, sweat, and joy are guaranteed!
