John Coltrane was born in 1926 and died in 1967. This year marks what would have been his 100th birthday. Despite his short life, he became one of the most important figures in jazz, with a profound influence on the music’s development.
Since 2019, Stockholm Jazz Orchestra has devoted part of its work to the music of one of jazz’s true giants – John Coltrane. Pieces such as Giant Steps, Naima, Equinox, Central Park West and Impressions, among others, have been arranged largely by members of the orchestra. An album of this repertoire was recorded live in Umeå and released on DO Records in 2020, to considerable critical acclaim.
Coltrane first came to prominence as a member of the Miles Davis group and appeared on the album Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz record of all time. With his own group, he reached a wider audience through My Favorite Things on Atlantic, where the soprano saxophone played a central role. In the later part of his career, his music moved towards a freer and increasingly spiritual direction. He also collaborated with Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and the vocalist Johnny Hartman, among others.
Stockholm Jazz Orchestra celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2024, with performances in Sweden, across Europe and internationally. The orchestra has appeared in countries including the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, South Africa, England and Ireland, and at venues such as Village Vanguard in New York and Ronnie Scott’s in London, as well as festivals including Cervantino in Mexico, Pori Jazz and Skeppsholmen, and at jazz educators’ conferences in Cape Town and New York.
