There’s a shimmer of sentimentality, nostalgia and longing running through it. Childhood synths, winding bass lines, pop-leaning harmonies and grunge-tinged guitars are woven together with honest songwriting and a strong sense of presence. Wildie now return with their fifth album, Still in Motion.
Wildie was born out of a meeting between city and countryside. When Anders Thorén left the stages of Malmö for the quiet of Österlen, the music found new space to be written for its own sake. Together with producer Rasmus Svensson, what began as solitary sketches slowly grew into something larger, and by 2014 the band had taken shape.
Over the years, seasoned players Martin Svensson, Per Henry Levi Knagg and Marcus Rostedt have joined the fold. With several songwriters in the band, the music has taken on a more collective voice. Wildie has become a place where friends from different backgrounds meet in a shared language of americana, folk rock and ’70s singer-songwriter tradition.
Still in Motion is the result of a long, shared search in the space where americana, folk and classic songwriting meet. Between Malmö and Österlen, they’ve carved out a sound where Scandinavian melancholy meets wide American horizons, with storytelling rooted close to real life.
Here’s a band that lets the songs find their own roads. Earlier singles like Lessons in Flying and The Heist lean into a kind of paraphrased, literary storytelling, while Any Other Day drifts along like a set-to-music stream of consciousness. On the centerpiece Kids, fragments of childhood, an unfinished love story and the passing of time come together like a quiet little short story.
On stage, the band is more than the sum of its parts, a chemistry shaped over time that, five albums in, feels stronger than ever.
