More about the artist

The Senegalese bass virtuoso, composer, and singer Alune Wade is a celebrated figure in the global jazz and Afrobeat scene, hailed as a "super talent" for his groundbreaking fusion of Afrobeat and jazz. With his captivating new project, New African Orleans, Wade explores the deep and enduring connections between West African rhythms, the Lagos Afrobeat groove, and the iconic brass sounds of New Orleans.

New African Orleans takes listeners on a vibrant transatlantic journey, seamlessly blending history, rhythm, and groove into an unforgettable musical experience. The project features reimagined classics like Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man alongside Wade’s original compositions, showcasing the profound influence of African heritage on jazz. Tracks such as From Congo to Square trace the evolution of brass music from its African roots to its expressive forms in New Orleans.

“I’m exploring a world that spans from my Senegalese roots to the lost branches on the other side of the Atlantic. I wanted to journey westward and spark a musical dialogue with the finest artists in Nigeria and the U.S.,” says Wade.

Alune Wade’s versatile and deeply rooted approach to the bass has cemented his place as a vital force in revitalizing the African jazz scene. Born in Dakar, Senegal, Wade’s remarkable career has seen him collaborate with legendary figures such as Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Oumou Sangaré, Bobby McFerrin, Youssou N'Dour, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Harold López-Nussa, Gregory Porter, Blick Bassy, Fatoumata Diawara, and many more.
