This evening, we will experience the extraordinary virtuosity and deep musical sensibility of the world-renowned Brazilian guitarist, pianist, and composer Egberto Gismonti—a technically masterful and soul-stirring experience. With his custom-built guitars featuring up to 14 strings and remarkable musicianship, Gismonti offers an unforgettable concert that takes us through Brazil's rich soundscape. Strongly influenced by the master Heitor Villa-Lobos, Gismonti draws on elements from jazz, Western classical music, and folk music to create his own musical language—unconstrained by genre boundaries. The concert will feature the Brazilian guitar virtuoso Daniel Murray as a guest.
Egberto Gismonti merges elements of Brazilian folk music, batuque from the Amazon indigenous people, Carioca samba and choro, along with northeastern Brazil’s frevo, baião, and forró, all within his own sophisticated and personal style. His music is both raw and elegant, rooted in tradition yet simultaneously innovative. It is not only a reflection of Brazil's diversity but also an expression of an artist who continuously explores new dimensions and perspectives.
Born into a musical family in Rio de Janeiro, Gismonti began studying piano at the age of five. On his first LP, Egberto Gismonti, released in 1969, he sang his own songs and collaborated with bossa nova composer Paulo Sérgio Vale. His international career took off with the album "Dança das Cabeças" (1977), a collaboration with percussionist Naná Vasconcelos, which was groundbreaking and put him on the world map. The album received recognition across multiple genres, demonstrating Gismonti's ability to cross musical boundaries.
After several years of touring and collaborating with international musicians such as Jan Garbarek, Charlie Haden, and Ralph Towner, Gismonti returned to Brazil to deepen his understanding of the music of the Amazon's indigenous peoples. His time spent with the Yawaiapitì tribe in the heart of the Amazon profoundly influenced his musical expression and view of music as a tool for cultural preservation.
Daniel Murray is regarded as one of the most talented guitarists of his generation and has an active career as an arranger and composer. He performs both as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles in Brazil and abroad, alongside prominent musicians such as Paulo Bellinati, Israel de Almeida, Toninho Carrasqueira, Rogério Wolf, Heloisa Petri, Andrea Kaiser, Joaquim de Abreu, and other well-known Brazilian guitarists and musicians.
