More about the artist

The internationally acclaimed ensemble, the Mathias Eick Quartet, is led by trumpeter Mathias Eick, one of Norway’s foremost jazz soloists. With his characteristic, yearning trumpet sound and strong melodic presence, Eick has created music that resonates with audiences far beyond the boundaries of jazz. Here, melodic modern jazz meets introspective compositions and sensitive improvisation.

Since 2008, Eick has been associated with the prestigious record label ECM, which also released his latest album, Lulleby, where he once again explores jazz’s lyrical and rhythmic landscapes together with his quartet.

Lulleby is Eick’s sixth studio album on ECM and brings together a star team of musicians, each chosen to create an acoustic expression that reflects Eick's vision. Alongside him is, among others, Estonian star pianist Kristjan Randalu, whose impressive range—from orchestras to jazz bands—adds a stability and virtuosity that has earned praise from DownBeat Magazine. On drums and percussion is the dynamic Hans Hulbækmo, whose experience with groups like Atomic and Skadedyr has established him as one of Norway’s most sought-after jazz drummers. Ole Morten Vågan, a masterful bassist and artistic director of the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, contributes his powerful and fluid bass lines, forming the foundation of the quartet’s rhythmic depth and precision.

Tonight’s music is characterized by a deep interplay between the musicians, where each instrumentalist has space to shine while the overall unity remains in focus. On Lulleby, we hear Eick's desire to express compassion for those affected by the conflicts in the Middle East, an issue that has moved him since childhood. The album was recorded in January 2024 at Rainbow Studio in Oslo, against the backdrop of ongoing unrest in the region, conveying a sense of reflection and empathy.

On stage:
Mathias Eick – trumpet
Kristjan Randalu – piano
Ole Morten Vågan – double bass
Hans Hulbækmo – drums and percussion

Support:
Lyder Røed Kvintett (NO)

Lyder Røed Quintet released their album Upside Down on August 30, 2024. The new music is both genuine and honest, inspired by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Nat Adderley, and much of the jazz that defined the 1960s, as well as Roy Hargrove and other more contemporary influences. Since their first record, the music has evolved, moving closer to the American jazz tradition while still keeping one foot— or at least a couple of toes—firmly planted in the Norwegian jazz landscape!

The ensemble was put together by Lyder in 2023 after years of collaborating with each member in various settings. These musicians are some of Lyder Røed’s absolute favorites and are a perfect match for the music being performed. The members are well-known for their work with bands and artists such as Fieh, Tigerstate, Philip Granly Trio, General Post Office, and Gabriella Garrubo.

On stage:
Lyder Røed – flugelhorn and trumpet
Aksel Røed – saxophone
Philip Granly – piano
Andreas Svabø – bass
Elias Tafjord – drums
